Vertu still alive with Million Yen Phones

March 30th, 2010

Just when you thought unlocked mobile devices were getting out of hand and becoming too much like pocket computers Japanese cell phone company Vertu is here to remind us just what ridiculous really is.  Vertu’s new line of cell phones are so over the top in luxury and greatly lacking in functionality that it is amazing that anyone would ever want to buy one of these phones.  If you are looking for a way to impress people with your ability to buy things for an extreme price that do not have serve that great a function then you should certainly check out Vertu’s new line of cell phones.  There are four phones in all, one for each season, and come in a skinny, sleek design.  Clearly these phones are only meant to impress as the price tag for each phone is $20 million Yen which is roughly $216,000.

Why someone would want to spend over $200,000 on one cell phone is beyond me.  These phones do not have any of the amazing capabilities that today’s smartphones have.  There is no GPS, WiFi, web browser or ability to send emails.  However, if you are looking to impress some people at the bar or on a business dinner then perhaps the Vertu cell phone is just right for you.  While this may be appealing to some people I will gladly take the newest Android smart phone or the latest iPhone over one of these cell phones from Vertu any day of the week.  Having the ability to be in constant contact with friends and family is far more important than showing off with this absurd status symbol.
