Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo Has First Hands On

Unlocked Sony Ericsson  Xperia (Neo) will be yet another phone that they are announcing at the Mobile World Congress. It will be one of the first phones to ship with Android 3.0 Gingerbread, an OS that was mostly designed with tablets in mind but should be very interesting to see on a mobile phone device as well. It is expected to be one of a number of different phones that launch with the newest version of the operating system.

The handset has been seen in previous unauthorized hands on events before and features a 854 x 480 pixel reality display as well as a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The Neo also features both front facing and back facing cameras, an HD video capture and an HDMI port. The phone is expected to be one of the hottest mobile devices on the market when it finally comes out. In the beginning, it may launch with Android 2.3 if 3.0 is not currently available for smart devices.

By all accounts the phone has an excellent design, seems very easy to use, and the fact that they are targeting the Android 3.0 software will leave the mouths of many mobile junkies watering at the idea. The XPERIA X10 unlocked handset line of phones has been solid throughout its history, and with the XPERIA Play just on the horizon, you can bet that Sony Ericsson is not willing to tarnish one bit of that brand with a sub par phone. Expect the NEO to be an excellent device that lives up to the expectations.

More information regarding the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress, where Sony appears to be poised to make several very, key

Nothing Comes of Android Lawsuit

Google can wipe their brow, because the trademark lawsuit against their “Android” brand name has finally come to an end. The judge threw out an attempt by Erich Specht to receive $94 million from Google after he claimed that he had continued to use the Android name in the Sim Free mobile space even after his company went under for the first time in 2002.

His company, “Android Data,” had been using the name previously, but the judge suggested that Specht had tried to use the company as a “sword,” as he put it,” to create confusion with the Google Android and profit from it. If that was his plan all along, it doesn’t make that much sense to draw attention to the fact that he was trying to use their name for his own profit.

The lawsuit was not expected to go much of anywhere and was a bit of a joke in the mobile industry when it was first announced. Google really had no reason to worry about it. They were clearly within their rights when they used the “Android,” name, and Specht never had much of a case to begin with.

These types of lawsuits have become increasingly common in recent years, as more and more Internet utilities continue to launch. As more names are used, people begin to feel as if their space is being invaded upon, or look for ways to try to get money out of large companies.

The amount of $94 million was a huge amount, and no experts expected the company to pay it forward. The original Android Data Corporation was originally founded in 2002, and Google did not file their trademark for the name until half of a decade later. With his company out of business, he no longer owned the trademark. He had demanded damages and also requested that Google change the name of their Operating System.

ComScore Releases Mobile Operating System Usage Numbers

ComScore released information today regarding the shifting trends of operating system usage in the mobile industry. The numbers that they released seemed to fall in line with the months leading up to this point, but there are a few interesting points of interest that the numbers touched on.

First of all, it appears that Research in Motion seems to be falling victim to an accelerated number of users jumping ship. Their subscriber base fell nearly 3% of the total number of mobile smart phone users, according to the data that ComScore released bringing their percentage of the subscriber pool to 35.8%, down form 39,3%. this suggests that their decline is speeding up, and the data seems to suggest that Android phone such as Xperia X10 unlocked has been able to sweep up most of those who are jumping ship.

Android saw their subscriber base increase 6.5% from 17% to 23.5% from previous releases. This is likely because an increased number of devices have been released that utilize the google Android operating system. According to ComScore, google was the big winner during their recent surveys and has seen their growth accelerate in recent months as RIM has seen an acceleration in their decline.

The only other company to see an increase in their share of the market was Apple’s unlocked iphone 4, who saw a 0.8% increase from the previously released numbers. Microsoft saw their market share dwindle 2.1%, while Palm lost 1% of their market share. It will be interesting to see if these trends continue or if RIM’s losses and Google’s gains slow down after the holiday season. With the release of the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook coming on a number of different carriers, a tablet device that is built for enterprise-level use, RIM is hoping to seesincreased interest in their products.

New Reader Application for Android Devices Confirmed by Google

Yesterday Google announced that they would be making a reader application available to users of the Android operating systems in the coming weeks. The application has been requested by many different users over the course of the last few months and it appears that Google is finally ready to address these concerns and provide them with the technology that they have been asking for.

They also announced a number of features that will be available with the new service including the ability to have multiple accounts associated with the same reader application. Other features that will be included are the ability to fully subscribe to different feeds and then read them through the reader, synchronized preferences between your online accounts and the account that you use for your mobile device. This is good news for individuals that have been using the Google Reader all along and would like to keep the same preferences when they use the application on their phone. This will ensure that you receive the same Reader results on both your smart device and on your personal computer.

Many of the features that are available on the desktop version of the app will also be made available on the mobile application. Although users have been asking for Google Reader to be available on the phone for quite some time, they should be happy to see that Google has made a strong effort to ensure that there is some synchronization with your current accounts and the ability to use many of the features that have been available on the desktop version of the reader when it was first released.

With the announcement of the forthcoming Google reader, checking up on your favorite websites through your Android device just got a ton easier. You can now customize the Reader results and should be able to quickly get to the websites that you visit the most without having to do too much porting from your desktop to Android device.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Shown

A picture was finally revealed of the brand new Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 model.  The picture was leaked when a person that went by the handle of Anzu posted it up on as a comment on an enthusiast blog.  The image that appeared showed a device that looked exactly like the  Unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 that ran a different build of the Android 2.1 operating system.

Although the picture was released, very little else about the phone is known about at this moment.  We are sure that over time more information will be leaked about the features that this phone and whether it is much of an upgrade over the older versions.  We will make sure to keep you informed on that.  However, what we do know is that it apparently has a HDMI out port, HD video recording capability, a 4.3 inch touch screen display, and a very slim surface.  This will make it very convenient for carrying it around since it will be pretty light weight.  This is all according to rumors of course, and nothing has been 100% confirmed at the moment.

There is also not much known about the release date yet, but rumors say that it will be out sometime around March of 2011.  That will make it be about six months away, so you can tell people are already getting very excited about this product.  It will almost most likely be running Android 2.3, which is the Gingerbread.  Some people might expect it to run the outdated version due to the picture that was posted on the blog earlier.  Even though there is not a whole lot  known about the features that this phone will have, more information will be leaked over time, so you should keep your ears open.  Lots of people will want to get their hands on this.

Opera Mobile for Android Now in Beta

Opera has officially released their Android version of their mobile browser for public testing while the app is in open beta. Officially titled Opera Mobile 10.1, the application has been in a closed beta for the last few months. Opera is a company that specializes is creating alternative browsers that fit the needs of a small niche of users, which makes the development of their mobile browsers all the more interesting. Often times the company will roll out features that the public has been asking for in other, more well known browsers for quite some time.

One of the most popular features that is included with the new app is the Opera Speed Dial feature. This works very much like the speed dial on your unlocked mobile device in that it allows you to browse through the favorites that you have saved to the Opera browser, and quickly click on them and navigate to the page. This is a feature that is missing from many of the more popular browsers that are available on the Android market.

Currently the App is available for open download on the Android market, but keep in mind that it is still in Beta so everything may not work perfectly as advertised.

It will be interesting to see if the Opera Mobile app for Android catches on with their niche audience as it has with other platforms. Opera is known for being quicker than most browsers across all platforms and relying on ease of use and accessibility to bring more users into the fold as it grows in popularity. The install size of the beta app will be around 20 MB in total, and the size of the app download will be smaller than 7 MB, according to a statement that was released by the company after it went live. Opera will be attempting to compete with the Firefox 4 beta, which was much larger in size when it was first released. Many experts said that they thought that Firefox was “bloated” with unnecessary features.

Positive Q2010 results for Sony Ericsson

The financial results for the second quarter was posted by Sony Ericsson where they said that there has been an increase in sales from the last quarter to the tune of around 25%. This was announced in an official statement by CEO Bert Nordberg. The rise in the sales has been primarily due to the launch of the two very successful phones by the company, the Xperia X10 and the Unlocked Vivaz. In fact Sony Ericsson has been making much more money and they now have a net cash stock of around 609 million Euros which means that they are making way more money that they would before. This has happened in spite of the fact that the average selling price has also increased by 19% to around 160 Euros in comparison to the last quarter.

This good performance has been well received by market analysts and they also see a good future for the company. The frameworks of the company are quite good and the base is already set for a better future performance by the company. What has helped them a lot according to several experts is proper business planning. They have focused on the right areas in the market and the products that they have released have largely been flawless and without major issues which cannot be said for its primary competitors especially in the Unlocked Smartphone market. In fact what has gone a long way to get them these figures is the fact that rather than focusing only on the smartphone market, they have come up with a good product mix. This has meant that they always have kept the money coming in no matter what.

Although we have been somewhat amazed at the huge popularity of the Unlocked Xperia X10 and how much money it has brought in, but we feel that going the Android way is the best for this company.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 falls somewhere in between XPERIA X10 Mini and XPERIA X10

As against most devices that are normally launched by Sony Ericsson, this year they are pursuing a much safer route through the release of a mobile powered by Google’s Android operating system. Aptly named the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, this mobile has proved to be a much desirable Unlocked Smartphone equipped with a variety of different features. Sony has also taken it upon themselves to come up with two lower end versions of the Unlocked XPERIA X10, with their XPERIA X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro. Both these phones are solid as mini versions of the full-sized X10. While having 3 models launching would be enough for most, this is not the case with Japanese-Swedish phone maker Sony Ericsson, as they have come up with a fourth mobile as a means of filling the gap between the X10 and its mini versions. This new phone is to be called the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 and is mainly designed so as to provide mid-ranged Android services.

Code named Shakira, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 is designed to look more like the Unlocked X10 Mini’s UI and not like the original Xperia X10. Since there has not been any official confirmation about this device, we still do not have any idea as to what would be the features rolled out with the X8. However, it is expected that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 will have a screen size of 3 -3.5 inches, fitted with a 5 MP camera on the back. Since it is to be a slightly scaled down version of the X10, a process of around 600 MHz should suffice. Although these are speculations, we assume that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 will be built along the lines of some average mid-ranged Android smartphones that are available today.

The only issue that Sony Ericsson might have with the X8 is that should it not be capable of meeting users requirements, no one would be willing to go ahead and purchase the Sony Ericsson X10 either.
