A recent statement released on Adobe’s website claims that in just under two years, its Flash technology will be used by more than 250 million unlocked smartphone subscribers. All this inspite of the fact that Flash will not make an appearance on any Apple products.

By 2012, Adobe claims to have a monopoly of around 53% of all smartphones. Although Adobe Flash is currently the defacto standard when it comes to viewing online video, it is currently not possible for smartphone users to directly access sites such as YouTube and watch videos. However, there are special softwares that come with each smartphone allowing users to watch such videos. While Adobe Flash is present on most devices, Apple criticizes the use of Flash on any of its smartphones due to the lack of touch capabilities associated with it as well as its high consumption of resources.
Currently, this technology is already present on most devices such as the Froyo and Motorola BackFlip Unlocked Android 2.2, but come 2012, it will soon be present on various platforms such as webOS, Symbian and BlackBerry. Adobe plans that gaining a vast public sharing on various platforms will automatically force Apple to relent on its standing against Adobe Flash.
A statement released on Adobe’s website says, “Even though Apple might not relent and decide on making use of Flash on their applications such as the iPhone, iTouch or iPad, we will still be able to see an increase in the overall market share of platforms using our web technology.”
While this is what Adobe plans to do, one can be sure that it would be nearly impossible to get Steve Jobs to relinquish his stance against Adobe. Considering the great success that the iPad as well as the iPhone are having, it seems that for now, users are quite happy, not having Flash on such devices.

The GSMA has recently announced that it is starting a solution to address mobile messaging spam. Mobile messaging spam is a growing problem for many unlocked mobile phone users. The GSMA Spam Reporting Service will provide a worldwide clearinghouse of messaging threats and misuse which have been reported by mobile users. The GSMA Spam Reporting Service is set to begin operations with leading mobile partners AT&T Mobility, Korea Telecom and SFR in France.
Users will be able to send a short code to ‘7726’ or SPAM whenever they receive an unsolicited text message. GSMA then will analyze all of the data associated with these messages and identify and aggregate reports of misuse by mobile messengers. Much like the CAN Spam law enacted by the FTC to help combat email spam messages the GSMA is looking to be the world’s watchdog when it comes to spam messages.

Each mobile operator participating in the pilot will receive correlated reports with data on threats and misuse originated both within and outside of their network; these reports will include data on misuse patterns, volumes and top originators of spam, regionally and worldwide. The initial service will be operated on behalf of GSMA by Cloudmark, Inc. a global leader in carrier-grade messaging security.
No one like to receive unwanted messages on their unlocked cell phone so the initiative set forth by GSMA and Cloudmark, Inc. is a welcomed one. By being able to gather vital information about unsolicited text messages we will be better equipped to stop the source of spam messages before the problem spirals out of control. By addressing this problem now we will most certainly be doing ourselves a favor in the long run where we are sure to be overrun with spam text messages.

Just when you thought unlocked mobile devices were getting out of hand and becoming too much like pocket computers Japanese cell phone company Vertu is here to remind us just what ridiculous really is. Vertu’s new line of cell phones are so over the top in luxury and greatly lacking in functionality that it is amazing that anyone would ever want to buy one of these phones. If you are looking for a way to impress people with your ability to buy things for an extreme price that do not have serve that great a function then you should certainly check out Vertu’s new line of cell phones. There are four phones in all, one for each season, and come in a skinny, sleek design. Clearly these phones are only meant to impress as the price tag for each phone is $20 million Yen which is roughly $216,000.

Why someone would want to spend over $200,000 on one cell phone is beyond me. These phones do not have any of the amazing capabilities that today’s smartphones have. There is no GPS, WiFi, web browser or ability to send emails. However, if you are looking to impress some people at the bar or on a business dinner then perhaps the Vertu cell phone is just right for you. While this may be appealing to some people I will gladly take the newest Android smart phone or the latest iPhone over one of these cell phones from Vertu any day of the week. Having the ability to be in constant contact with friends and family is far more important than showing off with this absurd status symbol.

Recently there was some big news for mobile device fans and unlocked cell phone users that have been eagerly awaiting the Opus One that was announced way back in December. Finally this new device has been formally announced by Motorola and is officially known as the i1. The new i1 device is the world first Android Push to Talk smartphone. The i1 is set to be released “this summer” by Sprint. While the price is currently unknown we do know a great deal about the various specs of this ground breaking new mobile phone.
The i1 is set to come standard with a 3.1” HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and dual-LED flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 2.5mm headphone jack. The i1 will be running the Android 1.5 with a custom UI overlay. Also, Motorola has decided to replace the stock Android browser with Opera Mini 5 plus Flash Lite as well as the Swype virtual keyboard. Those last three features are sure to get a lot of consumers’ attentions as there are not many phones capable of running flash on them. Throw in the fact that this is the worlds first push to talk Android phone and the i1 is set to be a huge hit when it hits the market this summer.

By also being on the Android OS the i1 will have a great number of apps that consumers can choose from to enhance their experience with the i1 mobile device. While it does seem like this phone has been a long time coming it appears as if the wait will be well worth it. It should be pretty interesting to see how this new phone will function and how they incorporate the push to talk feature that I am sure many people will find very helpful.

Ever since the Swype technology was released many people have wondered if it is actually faster than touching each letter individually. With the Swype technology users will make a swiping motion through the letters of a word they would like to type instead of pressing each letter in the word. It was not really known if this method of communicating was actually faster until recently.

Samsung, looking to play up the fact that their Omnia II comes with Swype right out of the box, set out to find the fastest Swype user so that they could set a Guinness World Record for fastest text message. Samsung turned to their employees Franklin Page to see if he could set the new record. Page was given the phrase:
“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human,”
A mere 35.54 seconds later Page banged out the phrase and set the record for fastest texter in the world. While that may appear to be a great rate for this message there is a bit of a catch with this new record. Previously Guinness would lump all text challenges together whether it be T9, QWERTY or touchscreen. Recently Guinness started placing these records into their own categories and this was the first challenge in its respective category. So realistically Page could have taken an hour and still would have set the world record for fastest Swype texter. Regardless of this little asterix it is still impressive that anyone would be able to bang out that message above in a mere 35 seconds. Maybe Swype is not the fastest way to send a text message but it is quickly proving its functionality for unlocked cell phone users.

With the upcoming wireless show CTIA, which is the largest wireless show in the US, there has been an abundance of information surrounding Samsung’s supposed announcements. Samsung is expected to make a bevy of announcement regarding various aspects of their operations. These announcements will be centered on new mobile devices, which can be unlocked cell phones, that they expect to release, various content offerings and newly developed hardware that is expected to increase the power of their mobile devices.
Among many other things Samsung is expected to announce the following at the upcoming CTIA conference:
- Samsung is looking to formally introduce their so-called “Smart Life” philosophy for smartphone design and differentiation. While this “Smart Life” is not so much a technology or actual device it is more of a strategy on how Samsung will produce the best smartphones moving forward.
- A 1GHz processor will be announced as the new “standard” in Samsung’s premium smartphone segment.
- There will also be a huge content push announced. Thankfully the US market will finally be included in this content push that is expected to include full length movies and shows that are optimized to take advantage of the company’s new Super AMOLED displays. There may also be some book and magazine deals that get straight to mobile deals.
- Finally, Samsung is expected to announce their newest smartphone the Galaxy S. This new Android device will take advantage of the aforementioned Super AMOLED display and the company’s 1GHz processor promise. This new phone is expected to be available in the US later this year.

It looks as if Samsung is taking full advantage of the upcoming CTIA conference with all of their expected announcements this week. It will be interesting to see how Samsung’s Smart Life philosophy actually changes the way that they develop their Samsung smartphones moving forward.

If you are like me and do not like to type out your texts, emails or notes on your Android mobile device and would rather use a stylus to write out your messages then your prayers are about to be answered. Android is taking steps to roll out Swype technology to all users which will be a welcomed site for all of us mass texters and email junkies. To get this program off the ground Swype recently announced their plans to start a beta testing program of which you can apply for at the website. Even though you can get some Swype technology for your Android phone, like the HTC Tilt unlocked cell phone, currently, it will be quite exciting to see what the official beta test looks like.

While Swype does mention that some of the user-installed copies will be missing some features that the factory installed versions will carry it is unclear at this time just what those features may be. Regardless of this minor setback participating in this beta program can be a great way to test this technology out and have someone listen to your feedback.
The Swype technology will support both the HVGA and WVGA screens which should cover a large range of phones really opening up this beta testing program to a lot of Android customers. Because the demand to be included to this program figures to be quite high it is important for you to get your applications in early for your HTC Tilt and often. You do not want to miss out on this opportunity to let Android know what you think about their latest feature.

There have been some interesting statistics have been released in the past couple days. With mobile devices like the iPhone unlocked mobile phone becoming more of a part of everyone’s everyday life, some of the statistics make perfectly good sense. CareerBuilders surveyed 5200 people that have jobs that keep them away from the office. Mostly these would be salespeople or others that find themselves on the road quite a bit. Some of the statistics are somewhat disturbing.

62% of people surveyed said that they take a look at their cell phones while they are dining. This makes sense as they may be eating by themselves and need to keep track of phone calls and other information that may be important to their job. 60% of the people stated that they also use their phones while vacationing. I guess the days of getting away from it all on vacation are now over. That used to be one of the benefits of taking a trip is that you did not have to hear the constant ringing of the telephone.
Now we get into some of the more weird statistics. 57% of the people surveyed said that they use the phone while in the bathroom. Hopefully, they have not only washed their hands, but also cleaned their cell phone as well. My luck, I would accidently drop my iPhone 3GS into the commode. 50% check their phone while in bed. This takes the concept of sleeping on the job to the extreme. One of the last statistics is that 50% of these people that were surveyed said that they do indeed check their phone while they are driving. Unless they are doing this hands-free, no one should be dealing with their cell phone while they are driving. There needs to be some type of separation between work and home and hopefully mobile phone users will begin to learn that there needs to be balanced between the two.
