Swype User sets Guinness World Record for Texting Speed

March 29th, 2010

Ever since the Swype technology was released many people have wondered if it is actually faster than touching each letter individually.  With the Swype technology users will make a swiping motion through the letters of a word they would like to type instead of pressing each letter in the word.  It was not really known if this method of communicating was actually faster until recently.

Samsung, looking to play up the fact that their Omnia II comes with Swype right out of the box, set out to find the fastest Swype user so that they could set a Guinness World Record for fastest text message.  Samsung turned to their employees Franklin Page to see if he could set the new record.  Page was given the phrase:

“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human,â€

A mere 35.54 seconds later Page banged out the phrase and set the record for fastest texter in the world.  While that may appear to be a great rate for this message there is a bit of a catch with this new record.  Previously Guinness would lump all text challenges together whether it be T9, QWERTY or touchscreen.  Recently Guinness started placing these records into their own categories and this was the first challenge in its respective category.  So realistically Page could have taken an hour and still would have set the world record for fastest Swype texter.  Regardless of this little asterix it is still impressive that anyone would be able to bang out that message above in a mere 35 seconds.  Maybe Swype is not the fastest way to send a text message but it is quickly proving its functionality for unlocked cell phone users.
