Apple Gives Low figures for q2 iPhone 4 Shipments

May 24th, 2011

Apple Gives Low figures for q2 iPhone 4 ShipmentsIn a move that pretty much confirms that at some point in the future we are going to be seeing the next version of the iPhone hit the shelves, Apple has announced that they are going to be cutting down on the production of the device. So far the company has been able to sell more than 18.6 million of the devices, and it is estimated that there are a total of one and a half non-purchased devices that are still available out there. So with rumors of the iPhone 4S SimFree all over the web, you can bet that Apple is preparing to release that.

Now, they have said that the second quarter shipment volume for the device has gone from 20 million units down to just 17.5 million, which could potentially go as high as 18 million units. So far, it looks as though, according to most rumors, that the iPhone 4S will be receiving a September release date, which should make the demand for the iPhone 4 plummet when it is released.

Sources have stated that the production of the next version of the device is currently slated for August.  Qualcomm will be in charge of the 3G and CDMA chip development and supply, so that is good news for those that are waiting for the next version of the device.

Apple Gives Low figures for q2 iPhone 4 Shipments

Apple did this just before the release of the iPhone 3GS too, so if the past is any indication of what we can expect from the company then it looks like the company is preparing for the next version of the device to come out and for the demand for the Sim Free iPhone 4 to fall off a bit at some point in the future. Although no official word has come from Apple at this point, look for them to release specific details at some point this summer.

PayPal App for Android Receives Photo Cheque Depositing

May 24th, 2011

PayPal has been continually adding a number of features to their apps. Last year, they added the ability to deposit checks through photos into your PayPal account. The idea is that you take a picture of the front and back of the check, and the money will go straight into your PayPal account. This is ideal because that means that you will not have to run down to the ATM or to the bank to deposit the check, which is something that many people would like to avoid if they could at all.

Now, they have announced that they will be bringing the same technology to their Android application as well. This is big news for Android users such as Simfree Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Motorola Atrix, etc, who are used to seeing new features come a little bit after they are released for the IOS device. The feature has already been rolled out and it looks as though users are already depositing money through checks straight into their account.

PayPal App for Android Receives Photo Check DepositingPayPal released the update for their app shortly after making the announcement, and rolled it out slowly to all of the different users. The latest build also allows users to move their app to their SD card for users that are worried about the amount of space that they have left on their phones. This is a feature that many smart devices have been adding in recent months. While a majority of users will not utilize it, it does provide some good functionality for those of us that like to keep our phones as open and free as possible in terms of storage space – especially with Android devices which seem to get bogged down when you are running out of space.

It is good to see that PayPal is putting time into their Android app as well. They first addressed updates for iphone 4 simfree and other iOS devices, and are now rolling those features out to Android users as well.

Carphone Warehouse to Exclusively Stock 1st X-Factor Smart-Phone

October 6th, 2010

The Carphone Warehouse are to exclusively stock an X-factor smart phone it has been announced this week. The Unlocked Nokia 5228 will come preloaded with X-factor wall papers, videos and other content. It also boasts a 3.2inch touch screen to allow users to catch up on the latest X-Factor videos and news.

According to the MD of Carphone Warehouse Matt Stringer: “We are huge fans of The X Factor, which is why we are so excited to be able to deliver live and exclusive content to our customers on a smartphone that already has impressive music features. It’s fantastic to have backstage gossip, videos and live interaction with The X Factor house at your fingertips on a phone that is great for social networking, so fans can stay in touch and enjoy all of the action together.”

The phone will retail at £69.99 and should hit shelves by the end of the month.

There is a lot more to this phone however than just X-factor content. The phone comes with a respectable 2MB integrated camera which is quite respectable for an entry-level unlocked smart phone.

Critics of the phone however say it is little more than a marketing stunt. As the X-factor app is exclusive to Nokia it appears they have taken advantage of this by pre-loading the app on the Nokia 5228 as well as some wall papers, videos and ringtones and calling it the ‘X-Factor phone’.

While essentially this is true, for just under £70 it’s hard to complain and even if it is just a customised 5228, for X-factor fans it’s a nice touch. So whilst the ‘X-factor phone’ may not be hugely remarkable, it certainly is quite nifty and will generate a lot of attention for the Carphone Warehouse amongst X-Factor fans.

Wired Magazine predictions turn true?

July 30th, 2010

Predictions, what or more aptly, where would we have been without them? It just seems that the Wired magazine has joined the elite group comprised of people like Jules Verne or Da Vinci. It has correctly predicted the forthcoming of a paramount technological advancement way back in 1999. Ok! Too much of beating around the bush and melodrama! Wired predicted that there would be something that roughly resembles the form of an Apple iPad sometime back in 1999.

There has been a small snippet from the Wired magazine that has been doing the rounds lately on the web. It seems to have mentioned in their column about the advent of an iPad sometime back and since the Apple iPad is actually here, there’s quite an unnecessary sensation about this piece of news.Steve Jobs had always promised that Apple’s iMac will be the ‘next big thing’ and it seems finally that it has lived up to the hype, the ludicrous sensationalism.

There had been a lot of speculation doing the rounds. People were quite skeptical about the fact that it was immensely difficult to eat into the Microsoft market. But iMac has done exactly that. If the sales of the iMac are anything to go by, Steve Jobs hasn’t only lived up to the expectations but surpassed them. There have been showers of accolades being furnished on him for the ‘rebound’ in their fortunes. Now these iMacs as predicted by the Wired magazine are lollipop laptops, a more serious series of handheld machines.  There has also been a mention on the ‘hype list’ that Apples techni-colored turnaround rests on its iMac’s success. Now it has also gone the distance and predicted that this rise in fortune might be short lived if Apple doesn’t produce such sensations every once in a while.

Palm ex-CEO talks about HP acquisition

July 9th, 2010

Smartphones would not have seen the light of day if it hadn’t been for Palm. This company was instrumental in making a market for the smartphone and making people aware of the new gizmo that was to take the 21st Century by storm. But then with the acquisition of the company by Hewlett Packard marks the end of an era.

It’s quite natural for the company to bring forth its achievements and accomplishments through out the years before it gets sold off to another company and perhaps passes into oblivion. This is exactly the route taken by the ex CEO Donna Dubinsky of the Palm company. He dove headlong into nostalgic tracks in his editorial for the Mercury News.

In his column he pointed out numerous technological advancements that were introduced by Palm, which is now implemented on the modern day smartphones.   Some among the points mentioned by him are provided herewith.

It’s one of the first Unlocked Palm Pre Plus phones  to introduce a computer based synchronization technology. It also brought in instant switching between on and off modes and prevented the slow user experience. It brought in also the Graffiti, which used touch interface with no keyboard. Theirs was the first hand held graphic interfaces, which were not character based. It was also the first successful mobile computing device, which had thousands of applications. The Palm 5 model was one that brought in style and sleekness to the looks of its model, which began a new era, and form factor became also an important feature.

Palm also brought in numerous other features which are being used in today’s smartphones but Palm’s unlocked Pre mobilephone failures lie elsewhere. They were using a completely muddled confusing software strategy in the middle years. More so, they failed to come up with some integrated solutions like those of Research in Motion.

Privacy Issues with Your Public Profiles

February 26th, 2010

Google has been in the news recently regarding their Buzz, which is a social network that is accessed through Gmail.  The big deal was the fact it the user had to opt out of the program or feature if they did not want their information to be made public.  This was a very can do something for most users, since they did not realize that they needed to do this.  Based on numerous complaints, Google decided that they would make some changes to the way in which Buzz was used.  However, this must have been a little bit too much too late.  A class-action lawsuit was filed in the United States claiming that Google breached people’s privacy.

Buzz was designed so that it could interface with Gmail as well as Google maps on you PC and your cell, like the Nexus One.  It would actually pinpoint on the map where you were, as well as display the address and other information about the location you were at.  Unfortunately, it also made this information public.  The lawsuit actually can affect over 31 million Gmail users and as of yet there has been no statement issued by Google about the pending lawsuit.  They have made some changes to that you are able to block anyone from being able to follow you without your permission.

This week we have also heard about the instances of security related problems in regard to using social networking.  There was a website that was put up that actually would be able to inform you that your location, because of your profile being public, is actually an invitation for would-be burglars to rob your home.  The creators of the websites say that they have done this in order to bring awareness to the fact that our public profiles can actually give information about our whereabouts, as well as being able to see what we Twittered and Buzzed to your friends.  Both of these situations has brought to light many issues surrounding personal security and privacy.  The important thing to remember is to make sure that your profile is made only available to those that you wish to see it as you use your unlocked cell phone.

What Does That Text Message Really Mean?

February 9th, 2010

We have come to expect our teenagers to be constantly texting their friends all day and all night. But as our cell phone devices become a larger part of our professional and personal life, we are seeing more and more adults texting all day and all night as well. What has this done for our one on one personal communication? Well, for starters, we are no longer focusing on those around us. And what about being able to see a person’s emotions or body language, which is a large part of the communication process. Those smiley faces and neat symbols we use on our iPhone unlocked really do not allow us to fully know if a person is being sarcastic or if they are being genuine.

We cannot hear what someone is saying and we can even begin to read between the lines, making it very easy to misread the nature of the communication. What can we do? We need to remember that texting and instant messaging is meant to send quick snippets of information to other people. We probably should not use it for serious discussions, especially about how we feel. The text message has allowed many to use it for difficult discussions. We are now hearing about more and more people texting someone that their relationship is over. Or we use it to tell someone good luck or congratulations. We do not take the time anymore to personally call or visit someone to extend our best wishes or to discuss uncomfortable topics.  We just use our iPhone 3GS unlocked and quickly text a message.

Our cell phones have given us many conveniences and ways to simplify life, but have we made things too simple? Maybe we are just waiting for those video phones to give us that one on one real time contact, where we can see their faces and their body language. It will be interesting to see the next wave of new technology over the next ten years. Hopefully we will still be able to sit down and just talk.
