Lured By Microsoft, Gavin Kim Departs Samsung

November 10th, 2011

Aldo Panessidi

Gavin Kim, Vice President of Samsung, announced his departure to head up Microsoft’s Windows phone product management team. As of September, Microsoft’s market share in the cell phone industry dropped to 5.6%. Luring Gavin Kim may be part of Microsoft’s plan to attempt to boost its market share in this competitive industry.

On Monday, November 7, 2011, Microsoft hosted a smart phone party in Manhattan. A six-story replica of a Windows Phone was erected in one of the most congested intersections in the world. Along with bands and dancers, Microsoft was determined to make a statement that the Windows Phone and mobile accessories are here to stay.Lured By Microsoft Gavin Kim Departs Samsung

According to an exclusive interview with BGR, Gavin Kim, outgoing Samsung cell phone executive, indicated his primary responsibility is to build consumer confidence in the Windows Phone platform, and to win over cell phone, developers, manufactures, and carriers. Considering the Windows Phone market share dropped from 5.8% to 5.6%, Gavin Kim has much work to do.

The Windows Phone is available through a few popular carriers. In addition, a handful of unlocked cell phones are available along with a host of cell phone accessories. However, consumers have not warmed up to the Windows Phone platform. This may be due to an unwillingness to change platforms or consumers may simply not like the Windows Phone platform.Lured By Microsoft Gavin Kim Departs Samsung

Convincing consumers to switch to a Windows Phone may be one of the toughest challenges Gavin Kim will face in his new role at Microsoft. While Microsoft refuses to accept defeat with its smart phone platform, only time will tell if Gavin Kim can successfully revitalize the Windows Phone.

Currently Microsoft has collaborated with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. In the next several months, marketing efforts will increase as Microsoft announces new carrier partnerships and new cell phones. Gavin Kim will need to roll up his sleeves and get to work on what seems an insurmountable task.

Summer Launch For The iPhone 5?

October 18th, 2011

With release of the iPhone 4S by Apple out of the way, it has made room for speculations of the next version of the Apple iPhone 5. The question needs to be asked why Apple decided to launch what is seen as an interim phone instead of the highly anticipated iPhone 5?Summer Launch For The iPhone 5?

It appears that Apple had two teams working on two separate iPhones. The iPhone 4S team had a mandate to improve on the existing SIM Free iPhone 4 to make it faster and better bring it up to par with the other smart phones in the marketplace.

At the same time it is rumored that Steve Jobs was heading up the development team for the iPhone 5 and that because of delays that occurred in February they realize that the release of a new phone was not possible in time for the holiday season. As a result, they decided to release the iPhone 4S as their product for the holidays.Summer Launch For The iPhone 5?

From an industry perspective the recent release of the iPhone 4S was seen as a negative one as the phone lacks many of the standard features now being introduced by other manufacturers. That said however, the sales figures for the iPhone 4S release are quite impressive and clearly shows that Apple has a huge following of supporters for anything they decide to release.

Since Apple had the development of two phones in progress over the last few months, there is speculation that the iPhone 5 will be released earlier than is typical for Apple phone. The iPhone 5 can be expected to hit the stores as early as the summer of 2012 which equates to a mere nine months between releases. Apple has never done this in the past but there is no reason to believe that this is not a good move sales of the iPhone 4S are fantastic and the anticipation of the iPhone 5 has been around for quite some time.

Gone is Google Buzz to Focus on Google+

October 17th, 2011

Over the past few years Google has been making several attempts to capture market share within the social networking industry. They released a handful of applications designed to try and gain some traction against the mighty Facebook. Tough task considering the sheer size of Facebook, but nonetheless important as the ability to do so clearly will provide an environment to push Google products.

On Friday, Google announced that it will be shutting down its Google Buzz service to focus exclusively on their new Google+ service. For those of you that don’t know, Google+ is an environment that allows you to create circles of friends in a private environment to share information similar to Facebook.Gone is Google Buzz to Focus on Google+

Initial reports of the recent launch have shown that Google has perhaps figured out the magic formula to creating an effective social networking environment. This release solidifies that as they now want to focus majority of their efforts on the Google+ platform.

Google Buzz was their attempt to try and merge e-mail, twitter, and Facebook like features into one simple environment. The problem was that the execution was poor and the service was more of a headache as opposed to a value added feature to the average user. Many of the key complaints were that Google Buzz automatically was added to Gmail accounts taking up valuable space and the attention span from users who only wanted to do e-mail. The implementation was taken straight out of the Facebook playbook and that they try to impose a new service without the consent of the user.Gone is Google Buzz to Focus on Google+

It will be interesting to see how the Google plus service further grows to become a legitimate competitor to Facebook. Many industry experts think it is too late, but anyone can do it is most probably Google as they are one of the few companies that have an existing user base to build a platform on.

New Cards App Announced for Apple iPhone and iPad

October 5th, 2011

Apple has launched a new Card App during their recent press conference surrounding the iPhone 5 / 4S. The APP is a software / service combination that allows you to create a post card, customize it, and have it automatically send you anyone through standard mail. As of right now, there are 21 different designs to choose from which can then be customized with the text you want as well as adding photos. The app itself has a built in feature that allows you to take a picture directly from within the app. From there the software with customize and overlay the photo on to the card making it look professionally done.New Cards App Announced for Apple iPhone and iPad

All cards created are saved and it allows you to customize at a later date to send to others or for different occasions. They are stored in the Card History section and allow you to also send the card to multiple addresses. Sending of the card can be done of one of two ways. You can enter all the information manually as a one off or you can choose from the list of contacts you have stored on your device. The app has the safeguards in place to make sure the information entered is correct and can be validated. The cost of the actual printing and mailing is a mere $3 for postcards to be sent within the United States and $5 to be sent internationally.New Cards App Announced for Apple iPhone and iPad

This is an interesting service provided by Apple and it clearly will have an impact on the post card industry as a whole. Will be interesting to see how other companies are able to provide a hybrid software / service all in one directly from a mobile phone such as SIM free BlackBerry BoldTouch 9900. It is fair to say that this type of service is the way of the future and we should expect more of it.

Rhapsody announces plans to acquire Napster

October 4th, 2011

Internet music subscription giant Rhapsody appears to be set to acquire the Notorious Napster. In case you don’t remember, Napster was one of the first companies to challenge the traditional music industry and how music was consumed over the Internet. Once a peer-to-peer music sharing network, Napster has evolved to be a full fledged music subscription service owned and operated by Best Buy. Details of the agreement are not finalized but it is reported that Rhapsody with acquire all of Napsters’ subscribers as well as some other assets. In exchange Best Buy will become a minority stakeholder in Rhapsody."rhapsody"

Completion of the deal will bring together two of the largest online music subscriptions services and put them under one umbrella virtually making them one of the biggest companies in the industry for music subscriptions. Consider this deal a must if they want to compete with the other giants in the industry such as iTunes for SIM Free iPhone 4, Android marketplace, Amazon, and others. It will allow them to offer more value to their existing clients and increase their chances of getting new ones. The clear cut winner has yet to be defined in the space and this is a step in the right direction if they want to keep pace with the others."napster"

Expect the deal to officially happen by the end of the year with November 30th, 2001 being their target date. We’ve seen these types of deals fall through in the past. With others hearing about the possible merger, they may try and get in on the action and buy Napster as well. This may end up being a classic bidding war situation where the winner will surely be Best Buy who owns Napster. This is actually standard when two industry giants attempt to do a merger of subscribers and services.

The Samsung Series 7 All-in-one

October 3rd, 2011

There has been a pattern that we are seeing over and over in the technology space. That is manufacturers entering into new markets of opportunity. The all-in-one computer is best known by Apple and their desktop Mac. Over the past few years we’ve been PC manufactures come out with their versions of the all-in-one. Add to the marketplace the Samsung Series 7 All-in-one and their take on the all inclusive desktop computer."samsung-logo"

Visually, the unit is nice and the design seems to be well thought out. It is compact and includes all the standard hardware that you would expect in an all-in-one desktop computer. Samsung has launched 2 versions with the differences being the computer speed and memory which is common. Standard in both configurations is a 23 inch screen with 1080p resolution and the support for 2 finger gestures. They also both include 4 USB ports, a 1TB hard drive, and support for Bluetooth 3.0, and a 1.3 megapixel camera."samsung-series-7"

The differences in the two models available are the CPU speed and amount of memory included. The specifications we received are a 2.6GHz Intel Core i3 CPU and 6GB of RAM or a 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB. Depending on what you plan to use the computer for, one of these configurations should do the trick. If you are one of the gamer types, you should be aware that both of these options come with an integrated video card meaning the memory of the graphics card is shared with the rest of the computer. Not a big deal for most but hardcore gamer should consider this fact prior to making a purchase. Pricing for the models are $999 and $1199 respectively. The way we see it is that much of the cost is going into the design of the computer and the fact that it is an all-in-one solution.

September 28th, 2011

Users have been waiting for quite some time for a viable update to Skype. It appears that they’re going to be updating their IOS app for SIM Free iPhone 4 and will be providing a mixed bag of different results for their users. They’re going to be adding a number of useful new features, that many users have been asking for for quite some time, and is also looking to add a call video stabilization for those that have been having trouble with the application first ruled it out.

"skype"One of the bigger updates that they’re going to be bringing is going to be inside the application advertising. This has not been there previously, and will allow them to better monetize their application. They had previously avoided adding advertisements to the application in fear that it would turn some users away when competition with the other was just heating up. Now that other companies have released their own versions and Skype seems to remain unaffected, it appears that they are finally looking to roll out the inside the application advertising that they have been planning for quite some time."Skype-iOS-Update"

They are also rolling out the Bluetooth update for talking on Spike on your mobile device to the application. This is something that they’re not previously released that many users have asked her, especially those that use the application. It will be interesting to see if they are going to be able to put together advertisements that are not going to be annoying and will not stick out too much to the user. A number of other popular applications have suffered greatly from having to deal with advertisements at one point or another. Skype has been able to bring in a new era of being able to speak with individuals and other nations that are relatively low cost through video chat or telephone calls. Their application has been highly popular and these new updates have been eagerly awaited for by users.

Huawei to Use Discovery Channel to Build Discovery Expedition Handset

September 28th, 2011

It looks like Huawei will be working with the Discovery Channel on their newest headset, title the Discovery Expedition. The company has long history of partnering up with a number of different brands to release highly targeted phone for individuals. This phone will likely be used with outdoor activities that the Discovery Channel would be ideal at promoting. Previously they release a phone that was Red Bull branded."huawei"

They are reportedly building a phone for the woodsman that is able to stand up against the toughest of water, dust, and even the toughest of elements while you were out and about. It is certainly going to be marketed to the woodsman. It is a device that is going to be able to provide a number of specifically garnered applications and features that are going to make it appeal to people that spend a lot of time outdoors.

Another phone by Huawei release with the branding of an unaffiliated company shows that they have received some good results in the past from these devices. It will be interesting to see if the newest release of the Discovery Channel branded phone will reap the same rewards as the Africa Company in the past."Discovery-Channel"

The phone will not have a camera, much to the surprise of many. You would think that an outdoorsman branded camera would be able to provide them with some really interesting marketing techniques. The Discovery Channel has not yet commented on this, but you can bet that they will have something to say about it in the very near future, especially since Huawei is one of the top brands across the globe.
