Motorola announces the i1

March 29th, 2010

Recently there was some big news for mobile device fans and unlocked cell phone users that have been eagerly awaiting the Opus One that was announced way back in December.  Finally this new device has been formally announced by Motorola and is officially known as the i1.  The new i1 device is the world first Android Push to Talk smartphone.  The i1 is set to be released “this summer” by Sprint.  While the price is currently unknown we do know a great deal about the various specs of this ground breaking new mobile phone.

The i1 is set to come standard with a 3.1” HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and dual-LED flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 2.5mm headphone jack.  The i1 will be running the Android 1.5 with a custom UI overlay.  Also, Motorola has decided to replace the stock Android browser with Opera Mini 5 plus Flash Lite as well as the Swype virtual keyboard.  Those last three features are sure to get a lot of consumers’ attentions as there are not many phones capable of running flash on them.  Throw in the fact that this is the worlds first push to talk Android phone and the i1 is set to be a huge hit when it hits the market this summer.

By also being on the Android OS the i1 will have a great number of apps that consumers can choose from to enhance their experience with the i1 mobile device.  While it does seem like this phone has been a long time coming it appears as if the wait will be well worth it.  It should be pretty interesting to see how this new phone will function and how they incorporate the push to talk feature that I am sure many people will find very helpful.
